The Marana area has been prime farmland for centuries. Located where Brawley Wash joins the Santa Cruz River, Indians used the water source to grow corn, beans, squash and cotton. With the Spanish coming around 1700, cattle ranching began. "Modern" Marana began in 1881 with the railroad. Back then the area was overgrown with dense mesquite thickets. Marana was incorporated in 1977 and has approximately 70 square miles within its boundaries. It is the main trade center and community focus for a vast rural area covering approximately 500 square miles. Agriculture remains a major force in Marana's economy. Irrigated farms grow a variety of crops and a large cotton gin provides employment. An interesting attraction just north of Marana is the Pinal Air Park. Built in World War II as an Army Airfield, today it resembles a large aircraft parking lot. Along with many retired commercial jets, the airpark provides repair and servicing of aircraft, including retrofitting 747s. Many other attractions are within an hour's drive of Marana. Picacho Peak State Park is the site of the only Arizona Civil War Battle, and is famous for its beautiful wildflowers each spring. Twenty miles east are the Santa Catalina Mountains and Catalina State Park. Marana is only a few miles from the western portion of the Saguaro National Monument, where the famous Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum and Old Tucson western movie set and theme park are located. The Town of Marana has a wide range of community facilities including a library, recreation center, and senior center. There are 10 public elementary schools, two alternative schools, two junior high schools and two high schools. Test scores at the Marana schools are consistently above the state and national averages.
